Toxic = harmful
– why do bad things happen to good people?
– why does it seem like evil is winning?

– God created a perfect world and everything was good
Genesis 2:16
– God really wanted to have communion / relationship / intimacy with us

Toxic Choice
– Genesis 2:17
– when God says “but” you need to listen
– right in the middle of everything good God created a choice they had to make
– have you ever made a toxic choice that you regret?
– our choices determine our destination
– our choices determine how fast we get there
– choices can cause you to live in the past, limit your preset, and destroy your future
Toxic Enemy
– Genesis 3:1
– it all starts in the mind
– Did you hear God say it?!
– enemy makes you doubt with this question
Toxic Compromise
– Genesis 3:2-6
– compromise leads to disobedience
– the Bible says sin is pleasurable for a season, but after a while the pleasures of sin fall away
– one bite and we were infected with sin — just one choice can destroy your life
– sin starts with disobedience (it started that way in the Garden)
– James 4:17

We live in a toxic world — how do we detox?
– you have to start somewhere or you’ll get nowhere
– journey of 1,000 miles starts with one step

Pick a day this week to fast with Pastor Rich
– sometimes you have to do something outside of the normal to get to where God wants you

don’t date to date
– we aren’t out here dating anyone we want to date. we are dating to get married.

If you’re on your second marriage you’re more likely (statistically) to get another divorce
– it’s important to build a healthy marriage he

if you don’t have the money to go out and eat, to buy something, then DON’T

Learn to fight fair
– Ephesians 4:26
– Ephesians 4:31-32
– what happens in the “behind the scenes” in your marriage will end up being shown to everyone
– marriage counseling is for ALL marriages
– inner healing & deliverance is important !!!

Communication
1. Confront quickly
2. HOT
– honest
– open
– transparent
3. No interrupting or talking over
4. No name calling
5. No yelling
6. Listening
– men, you don’t have to FIX everything. sometimes you just need to listen

couples that pray together, stay together

Proverbs 18:22

What does love, marriage, and relationships look like after a while?!
– any relationship if you don’t cultivate it will lose it’s fire

pillow talk: relaxed intimate conversation associated with dishonesty

God loves to write love letters:
– God writes a love letter to the Church in Revelations

Revelations 2:2-3
– being positive always gets your attention.
– God was checking things off a list seeing all the things they were doing right
– positivity always opens the door for correction
– we check off Church on Sunday, have my offering, and read my Bible
– too often we focus on our acts of service to the Kingdom rather than focusing on God
Revelations 2:4
– life and hurt happens so we try to forget that relationship is there
– God has not forgotten about you
– God wants to show you who you are in 2020
– it doesn’t say he “lost” his first love, it says he “left” his first love.
– “left” = drifted
– the prodigal son left his home for a while
– God is still where you left Him
– sometimes it’s hard to find what we’re looking for because
– we’ve gone off track
– we’re blinded by the world
Revelations 2:5
– there are times when we have fallen and we can’t get up
– sometimes falling is fast or sometimes it’s a slow fade process
– What can cause you to fall?
– bad choices
– pride
– go back to the beginning and rediscover how good the Father is

Love prioritizes pursuing over performing
– the prodigal son went back to the Father and pursued the relationship he had
Love allows you to look in the mirror and not out the window all the time
– God has to show you where you’re going
To pursue means you do self-evaluation

Gods not looking for what you can check off on a box, He’s looking for you to come to Him and pursue Him

The son thought he was the only one pursuing but the Father was pursuing him everyday

God allows U-turns
– just turn around and return to your first love

Psalm 51:10-11
– David has a little pillow talk with God and asked for repentance

The story of the prodigal son and David shows mercy and that grace covers us. we are never too far from God

The relationship we have with Jesus Christ is the most important relationship we have. Once you pursue this one all the others will fall into place

Nehemiah

– sometimes we can get desensitized when we can’t see it or it doesn’t effect us // aka we become comfortable in our captivity
– until you allow God to change you from the inside out you’ll never know the truth

Galatians 4:7

How to Rebuild:
1. Recognize the Problem
– Nehemiah 1:3
– recognize and acknowledge that there is a problem
2. Respond to the Problem
– how do you respond to bad news?
– How we respond matters
– Nehemiah 1:4
– repentance—to turn away from your sins & mean it
– God can do great things through repentance
– sometimes broken times are the best place for God to work & get your attention
– Nehemiah 1:8-8
– Don’t just be a hearer of the word, be a doer of the word
3. Remain
– If you remain you’ll find there are two roads you can choose from
– but stay in the process, choose the narrow road, and be consistent
– consistency is the key to breakthrough
– Hope changes nothing, actions do
– We must have faith to go
– Nehemiah 2:7
– Proverbs 16:7
– sometimes you have to run the race even if you can’t see the finish line
– faith = trust
4. Take it to the King
– don’t get solutions from people who don’t have the answers
– only take advice from people who are where you want to be
– get advice from the King, the only one who truly knows the solution
– Nehemiah 2:3
– God doesn’t want just good things for our life, he wants great things for our life

While building is good, rebuilding is sometimes necessary
– be torn down to be built back up

What does your foundation look like?
What are you building on?

Matthew 7:26-27
– no matter how well you build the “sandcastle” it will fall because it’s not built on firm foundation
– most people don’t care what the foundation looks like because they want to see the finished product
– it’s what’s under the surface that hold you up
Matthew 7:25
– storms are going to hit us in life
– a strong foundation matters because if you fall, they fall
– people are watching you and what you’re building on
– you have influence in your life
Hebrews 6:19
– your foundation will keep you steady when everything is going crazy around you
Matthew 7:24-25
– wise people build on the rock
– your foundation becomes strong when you believe in something
– you have to believe that Jesus is the answer
Philippians 1:6
– what God has done He will finish
– stay in the process and build the walls
– don’t discount what God is doing even if it’s small

You have to give God the blueprints of your life & surrender control to Him

2 Corinthians 5:17
– God rebuilds is with new materials
– but you’ve got to let go of some things

After the holidays everything goes back to normal… but is that really what we want for 2020?
– How has 2019 been to you?!

How you leave one season can determine how you enter into the next season

Our life consists of three things:
1. past
– the past is the most crippling thing in our minds… we spend a lot of time there
– Philippians 3:13
– Isaiah 43:25
– unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, guilt, shame, regret only keeps you in bondage & trapped in the past
– These are the things of your past you need to let go NOT for their sake but for yours
– sometimes looking back is a good thing because you can look at what God has done in your life
2. present
– being comfortable brings complacency
– THERE IS ALWAYS MORE OF GOD
– we have to keep moving forward
– Philippians 3:14
– when you want something from God you’ve got to press towards Him
– make Jesus your goal
– we have an upward call not just to barely make it
– don’t do just enough to get to the place where you need to be
3. future
– jeremiah 29:11
– the choices we make now will affect our future
– Ezekiel 46:9
– you can’t go back the same way you came in
– God wants to change you in a way that won’t allow you to go out the same way — He has a NEW way
– even though the old way is familiar, don’t get comfortable in your own captivity
Where do we start?
– We start with fasting and prayer
– Sometimes we try to put too much trust into a person, church, thing, relationship, position
– Jesus needs to be our first choice rather than the last resort
– Mark 9:23-24
– sometimes it’s not the lack of faith but the amount of unbelief we have in our hearts
– the enemy is going to talk to you no matter what, but we have to understand that He’s a liar and we need to ignore his voice and hear the voice of the Lord
– need to change the way we look at it to the way God looks at it
– Mark 9:29
– some things in your life can only come out by drastic measures
– with expectation comes preparation
– if you wanna see something happen you have to do the work to prepare for it
If we intentionally change what we give our attention to, it will change your affection

Light is a major theme of the Bible
– Genesis 1:1-4
– God used light to display what He was about to create
– everything in the physical was good, but when man fell — spiritual darkness happened
After 400 years there was a light that entered into the world
– they didn’t know it was Jesus though
– Isaiah 9:6
– they were looking for royalty — someone different than who came into the world
– God allowed the darkness so he could display the true light
– John 1:4-5
– many didn’t pay attention to this light because the light didn’t look appealing
– John 1:14
– Hebrews 4:15
the light was wrapped into humanity
– You cannot discard the light that came into the world, it was developed over a period of time
Jesus was born in the dark & it took him a period of time to develop. God had to wait for the specific time for him to come
– Jesus went through the process so we need to learn to go through the process
We can see the light if we pay attention
– God shines his light onto us
– it’s always available and it’s our choice
John 12:46

Are there areas where you’re walking into darkness?
– when Jesus’ light comes into our lives he exposes things we didn’t know we had before
Your limitations are Gods opportunity to shine
– the thing you thought was gonna kill you is the thing God is going to propel you with

Why should we shine?
– Matthew 5:16
– the world is watching us
